UPSC Prelims Syllabus

The UPSC Prelims, or Civil Services Preliminary Examination, assesses a candidate’s aptitude and understanding of diverse subjects. These papers comprise multiple-choice, objective-type questions.

UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2024

Two Compulsory Papers General Studies Paper-I
General Studies Paper-II (CSAT)
Number of Questions asked in GS Paper-I 100 Questions
Number of Questions asked in CSAT 80 Questions and is Qualifying in nature
Total Number of Marks GS Paper-I – 200 Marks

CSAT – 200 Marks

Negative Marking 1/3 of the total marks allotted to the question will be deducted for every wrong answer
Time Allotted Two hours each;

  • GS Paper-I – 2 Hours (9:30 AM -11:30 AM)
  • CSAT – 2 Hours (2:30 PM – 4:30 PM)

UPSC Prelims Syllabus 2024

  1. General Studies Paper-I:
    • Current events of national and international importance
    • History of India and the Indian National Movement
    • Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, and Economic Geography of India and the World
    • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
    • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
    • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization
    • General Science
  2. General Studies Paper-II (CSAT):
    • Comprehension
    • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
    • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
    • Decision-making and problem-solving
    • General mental ability
    • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level)
