The Kite Runner Summary
The story is narrated by Amir, a privileged Pashtun boy living in Kabul, Afghanistan, in the 1970s. Amir’s closest friend is Hassan, a Hazara boy who is also Amir’s servant’s son. Despite their different ethnic backgrounds, the two boys share a deep bond, bonded further by their love for kite running, a popular Afghan sport.
One day, during a kite-fighting tournament, Amir witnesses Hassan being brutally assaulted by a group of bullies led by Assef, a sociopathic Pashtun. However, Amir is too cowardly to intervene and instead chooses to distance himself from Hassan, feeling guilty and ashamed.
Amir’s guilt over his betrayal of Hassan haunts him for years, even as he and his father flee Afghanistan following the Soviet invasion and settle in the United States. In America, Amir pursues a career as a writer and marries Soraya, but he remains haunted by his past.
Years later, Amir receives a call from Rahim Khan, his father’s old friend, who is dying in Pakistan. Rahim Khan reveals that Hassan was actually Amir’s half-brother, the result of an affair between Amir’s father, Baba, and Hassan’s mother, Ali’s wife. Hassan had been killed by the Taliban, leaving behind a son, Sohrab.
Rahim Khan urges Amir to return to Afghanistan to rescue Sohrab from an orphanage and redeem himself for his past sins. Amir reluctantly agrees and travels to Kabul, now under Taliban rule, to find Sohrab. He discovers that Assef is now a powerful Taliban official who has Sohrab under his control.
In a climactic confrontation, Amir confronts Assef and manages to rescue Sohrab, but not without sustaining severe injuries himself. Amir and Sohrab return to America, where Amir vows to provide Sohrab with the love and care he needs.
