Short Biography of Ramanujan
Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar (December 22, 1887 – April 26, 1920) was an incredible Indian mathematician. He is celebrated as one of the most brilliant mathematicians in history. Ramanujan was born into a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family in Erode, Tamil Nadu. His father, K. Srinivasa Iyengar, worked as a clerk in a sari shop, while his mother, Komalatammal, was a housewife who sang at a local temple. They lived in a small traditional home on Sarangapani Sannidhi Street in Kumbakonam, which is now a museum.
At just five years old, Ramanujan began attending a local school. However, he did not enjoy the school environment and often tried to avoid going. Despite lacking formal training in mathematics, he showed extraordinary talent in this field. Eventually, after his maternal grandfather lost his job, Ramanujan and his mother moved back to Kumbakonam, where he was enrolled in Kangayan Primary School.
Ramanujan faced many hardships, living in poor conditions without stable employment. After getting married in 1909, he sought steady work and had an important interview with a government official named Ramachandra Rao. Impressed by Ramanujan’s mathematical skills, Rao supported his research, but Ramanujan chose to find work at the Madras Port Trust instead of depending on charity.

Despite being almost completely unaware of modern mathematics, Ramanujan’s self-taught knowledge was outstanding. His understanding of continued fractions was unmatched among mathematicians of his time. He made significant contributions such as discovering the Riemann series and exploring elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series, and the functional equations of the zeta function. His unique approach led to the invention of Ramanujan summation, a technique for assigning values to divergent series.
Interestingly, he had limited knowledge of certain mathematical concepts, such as doubly periodic functions and Cauchy’s theorem, and he often struggled with formally proving his theories. While many of his theorems on prime numbers turned out to be incorrect, his brilliance was undeniable.
