About Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond is a celebrated contemporary Indian writer of British heritage. He has inspired countless young readers with his charming children’s books and enriching stories. Born on May 19, 1934, in Kasauli, India, he is the son of Edith Clarke and Aubrey Bond. His father worked in the Royal Air Force, resulting in a life filled with travel and adventure.

Room on the Roof

Room on the Roof tells the tale of Rusty, a seventeen-year-old Anglo-Indian boy who finds himself orphaned after his parents’ demise. Living with his strict guardian, Mr. John Harrison, Rusty doesn’t feel at home. Longing for freedom, he escapes to join his Indian friends. As he explores the vibrant culture of India, from its customs to its lively bazaars, Rusty realizes the beauty of his surroundings. Eventually, he secures a job teaching English to a boy named Kishen, which grants him a tiny room on the roof.

This heartfelt book won the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957.

The Blue Umbrella

The Blue Umbrella is a touching 1980 novel set in a quaint Himachal Pradesh village. A young girl named Binya trades her lucky leopard’s claw pendant for a lovely blue umbrella. This beautiful possession draws the envy of many, especially old Ram Bharosa, the shopkeeper, who will stop at nothing to possess it.

In 2005, it was adapted into a Hindi film by the same name, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The film went on to win the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film!
