The story opens with Mr. Charles Bingley, a wealthy bachelor, and his friend Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, who is haughty and distant, arriving in the area. Mrs. Bennet hopes that one of her daughters will catch Mr. Bingley’s attention since she is eager to see her daughters married off to affluent husbands.
Based on their early interactions, Elizabeth Bennet first perceives Mr. Darcy as conceited and unpleasant, developing a bad image of him. Jane, her elder sister, develops feelings of passion for Mr. Bingley in the meantime.
