About Kanyashree Prakalpa
The Kanyashree Prakalpa, launched by the Government of West Bengal, is a conditional cash transfer scheme designed to improve the status and well-being of the girl child. The scheme encourages all teenage girls to stay in school and delay their marriages until they reach 18, the legal age of marriage. By supporting girls through financial assistance, the Kanyashree Prakalpa aims to uplift socio-economically disadvantaged families and prevent early, unsafe marriages.
Kanyashree Scheme Details
The Government of West Bengal has implemented Kanyashree Prakalpa to protect and promote the rights of girls in the state. It acts as a safety net for vulnerable families pressured by social norms or financial challenges to stop their daughters’ education and force them into early marriages. The scheme aims to:
- Encourage girls to continue their education longer and complete secondary or higher secondary education or equivalent in technical or vocational streams, giving them better opportunities in life.
- Discourage marriage before the age of 18 to help reduce risks related to early pregnancies and improve health outcomes for both mothers and children.
