Greater Bangalore Area List

The Greater Bengaluru Area is undergoing exciting changes with the establishment of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which will officially take over from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) starting Thursday, May 15. This important update aims to improve urban governance in Bengaluru and address various challenges like infrastructure problems, traffic congestion, and urban sprawl.

Understanding the GBA’s Role

The GBA Act, enacted by the Karnataka Legislature in February 2024, makes significant changes in response to the demands for better governance in Bengaluru. Our city is experiencing rapid population growth, putting a strain on our infrastructure and environment. Unlike the BBMP, which manages about 709 square kilometers, the GBA is designed to cover over 1,000 square kilometers, including many nearby villages.

Leadership and Governance Changes

As per the GBA Act, the state government will appoint a chief commissioner who is expected to have at least the rank of additional chief secretary. The chief minister will lead the GBA, with the Bengaluru development minister acting as vice-chairperson. These leaders will be crucial in shaping the future of urban governance.

The chief commissioner will have a term of three years, and the revised Bill has removed previous provisions that allowed for the removal of the officer by a two-thirds majority of the GBA due to misconduct, neglect, or incapacity. This change ensures a more stable tenure for the chief commissioner under the state’s oversight.
