Dracula Book

“Dracula, penned by Irish writer Bram Stoker in 1897, stands as a quintessential Gothic horror novel within the realm of English literature. This epistolary work unfolds through a series of letters, diary entries, and newspaper clippings, steering away from a single protagonist. It begins with Jonathan Harker, a solicitor, embarking on a business trip to the castle of Count Dracula, a nobleman residing in Transylvania. After uncovering the dark truth that Dracula is a vampire, Harker makes a narrow escape, prompting the Count to journey to England and cast his sinister shadow over the coastal town of Whitby. In response, a small band led by Abraham Van Helsing takes it upon themselves to investigate and hunt this formidable vampire.

Stoker’s creation of Dracula mainly took shape during the 1890s. He compiled over a hundred pages of notes, delving into Transylvanian folklore and history to enrich his narrative. While some scholars propose that Dracula’s character may have been inspired by historical figures like Vlad the Impaler or Countess Elizabeth Báthory, this notion remains contested, as Stoker’s notes do not mention them. Interestingly, Stoker discovered the name ‘Dracula’ in a public library in Whitby during his vacation, mistakenly believing it to mean ‘devil’ in Romanian.”
