उत्तररामचरितम्
Uttararāmacarita (The Later Story of Rama) is a Sanskrit play written by Bhavabhuti, consisting of 7 acts in the Nataka style. This play beautifully narrates the events of the Uttara Kanda from the Valmiki Ramayana, focusing on the final years of Rama’s life on Earth, all the way to his ascension.
Theme and Summary
With seven acts in total, the central theme of Uttararāmacarita revolves around Sita’s abandonment. The first act provides a concise overview of Rama’s story, reaching up to the fire-ordeal of Sita. The ordinary people, who were not present during the fire-ordeal, were not persuaded and made harsh criticisms of Rama’s decision to accept Sita back. This external pressure led Rama to take the unfortunate step of abandoning her. He sends Sita away under the guise of allowing her to revisit the forests during her pregnancy. Despite this, Rama never doubted her purity and never truly banished her from his thoughts, resulting in a living death for him over the following 12 years.
