Kamarajar’s Early Life and Struggles
Kamarajar discontinued his school education after the sixth grade due to the family circumstances. Later, he worked in a cloth shop run by his uncle Karuppaiya Nadar. During his time in the shop, he developed a habit of reading newspapers, which sparked his interest in the freedom struggle and politics at a young age. He made it a point to attend every freedom movement meeting happening nearby. Influential Congress leaders like P. Varadarajulu Naidu, Thiru. V. Kalyanasundaranar, and Satyamurthy inspired him further with their speeches, which pulled Kamarajar deeper into the freedom movement.
Kamarajar’s Involvement in the Freedom Movement
Kamarajar’s family didn’t support his involvement in the freedom struggle, so they sent him to Thiruvananthapuram. There, he worked at another uncle’s vegetable shop. Despite this, Kamarajar continued his engagement in the freedom movements. He participated in the Vaikom Satyagraha, which supported the oppressed people in Kerala, and even saw the presence of Mahatma Gandhi, who helped make the protest successful. It is noteworthy that Kamarajar played an active role in this significant protest.
Political Life and Commitment
Understanding his family was living in poverty, Kamarajar returned to Virudhunagar from Thiruvananthapuram. His family urged him to get married, but Kamarajar firmly refused. He expressed that he would not marry until India gained independence, dedicating himself entirely to the freedom struggle. Remarkably, even after India attained independence, he chose not to marry.
