Surah Al-Fātiḥah – The Opening of the Quran
Surah Fatah, also known as Al-Fātiḥah, meaning “The Opening” or “The Opener,” is the very first chapter of the Quran. Translated by George Sale as The Preface or Introduction, it consists of seven verses (āyah) that serve as a heartfelt prayer for God’s guidance, lordship, and mercy. This chapter holds a vital place in Islamic prayer and rituals.
The Importance of Surah Fātiḥah
The primary literal meaning of “al-Fātiḥah” is “The Opener.” This can refer to Surah Fatah being “the opener of the Book” (Fātiḥat al-kitāb), as it is always recited in full during every prayer cycle. Additionally, it signifies how this Surah initiates many important aspects of daily Islamic life. Some Muslims believe that Surah Fātiḥah opens a person’s heart to embrace faith in God.
